Opportunities
In short: if you are interested in joining the group, please don't hesitate to email Alex with an explanation of your background and your interests. Also, we are looking for a new postdoc to work on algorithm development for retrieving SMAP L-band vegetation optical depth and disentangling live fuel moisture content from SMAP data - using either physically based or machine learning based (transfer learning and/or other methods) approaches. See details here.
Undergraduate and Masters students
If you are a current Stanford undergraduate or MS student interested in gaining research experience at the intersection of remote sensing and earth system science, send me an e-mail at konings@stanford.edu. We can talk about several project options to find one that would interest you. If you are not currently at Stanford, please note that the Earth System Science MS program is very small and I do not accept students to this program.
Prospective PhD students
Prospective students wishing to pursue a PhD in our group are encouraged to e-mail Alex at konings@stanford.edu. Please include a CV. Students with strong quantitative backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply. Students should apply to the PhD program in Earth System Science. Outstanding applicants interested in developing leadership skills can also apply to the Knight-Hennessey Scholars program alongside their departmental application. The deadline for the Earth System Science program is in early December, and for the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program in early October. Application fee waivers are available for the departmental application, see here for more information. Note that the deadline to apply for this waiver is usually 10-15 days before the departmental deadline.
Please note that I do not accept terminal MS students in my group.
Either before or during their tenure at Stanford, students are encouraged to apply for national fellowships.
Postdoctoral fellows
As mentioned above, we are looking for new postdocs! In particular, we are looking for a new postdoc to work on algorithm development for SMAP L-band vegetation optical depth. Please reach out to Alex to apply and see details here.
Outside of the positions above, prospective postdocs may also want to apply to fellowships for their own career benefit, or if they are interested in other topics relevant to the group we do not currently have funding for. Several opportunities are relevant. Stanford has a university-wide competitive postdoctoral fellowship program, the Stanford Science Fellows. Additionally, the Stanford Doerr School Sustainability Leaders Postdoctoral Fellowship is another competitive fellowship. The deadlines for both are typically annually around November. If you are interested in applying to either of these fellowships or to one of the fellowships listed below, please reach out to Alex beforehand to discuss whether or not the group would be a good fit for you. Applying for a postdoctoral fellowship in the absence of a posted position generally means you would be expected to have some independent ideas of possible topics to work on.
Several national fellowship programs may also be relevant:
- NSF Earth Science postdoctoral fellowships (deadline ~September)
- NOAA Climate and Global Change fellowship (deadline ~January)
- L'Oreal USA for Women in Science fellowship (deadline ~February )
- Stanford Data Science Postdoc fellowship (deadline ~December)
- Stanford Sustainability Accelerator fellowship (deadline ~December)
- USDA AFRI Postdoctoral Fellowship
